Detox: Day 5- Crash and Burn

As outlined, I'm forgoing alcohol, caffeine from coffee, sugar, dairy, wheat, non-oceanic animal protein and eggs for seven days. Essentially, I'm sticking to (solely organic) produce, grains and legumes.

Even the start to the day was horrid. I woke up ravenously hungry and found myself dreading going to my mother's yesterday evening and not having pizza with her and my sister. I got through the day just fine at work (if you don't count an allergy-headache), but it was the drive home that brought an end to my detox. An amalgamation of the onset of allergies in the late afternoon, a subsequent near-migraine headache due to allergies, gnawing hunger and bad traffic were too much for me to handle. I pulled off the freeway, grabbed some coffee (caffeine being the quickest thing to end headaches), called my mom and broke down crying out of frustration, exhaustion and hunger. I ended up watching the freeway inch along while drinking iced coffee and contemplating the detox.

My thoughts on the experiment are mixed and I plan on doing a whole post dedicated just to it. I'm happy I made it through five out of seven days and don't consider it a loss by any means. I'm currently enjoying a half decaf/half regular iced coffee and couldn't be happier to have it back. :-)

  1. I'm currently on a fitness re-commitment and my beau is doing his clinicals in nursing school (he's given me lots of advice)... I have some thoughts, but I am a nobody and most certainly not a doctor.

#1. No offense, but I think food detoxes are BS. You have the right to try any sort of anything you want, but I think these sort of extremes set one up to fail.
#2. My first inclination when you outlined your plan was "not enough calories". I think you would have felt better if you kicked up the snacks. I've been doing some fruit and something else (a HANDFUL of nuts or a small glass of OJ, for example).
#3. I think you need to give yourself a longer period to phase out caffeine. It's a drug. I'd say, realistically, make a 4-week plan (that's what I would do, but I'm fighting other fights at the moment).

I'm in no way raining on your parade. I think your plan for your protein and greens (and green smoothies, yum. Kale is amazing in everything, I swear!) was awesome. I'm a vegetarian going on vegan, just for context.

What you were trying to do was DIFFICULT, don't be too hard on yourself. :)

  2. Thank you for all the feedback!
#1: It was only a week long detox. I wouldn't attempt to do anything that severe long term. Five days apparently is my max! :-)
#2: I didn't go into this with any meal plan in place. That may have been my downfall. I didn't realize how hungry I would get and hadn't planned for it. In addition, I loathe counting calories at this point and attempt to just go by my bodies natural hunger signals.
#3: Caffeeeiinnnne. I have nothing else to say on this matter. Le sigh. So difficult to go without!

I don't see your comment as being negative in any way. :-)
